2002 Caravina Cabernet (Sold Out)
2002 Caravina Cabernet (Sold Out)
Tasting Notes
This wonderfully concentrated Cabernet offers subtle aromas of tobacco, blackberry, bosenberry and mulled spices and then vibrant dark fruit, cassis and leather flavors normally only present in wines half its age. The tannins of this wine are still fierce yet integrated and the wonderful acidity of this wine also shines through. To fully enjoy this wine’s complexities and layers, revisit it several times over many hours.
Ratings
Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate (Feb. 2005) 90 points
“The outstanding 2002 Caravina (1600 cases) reveals sweet tannin along with big, full-throttle, dense, black currant, loamy soil, chocolate, and vanilla flavors. Full-bodied, rich, and impressive, this is no ordinary second wine.”
Vineyard Notes
Seavey’s fourth estate-produced Caravina, the 2002, was made from grapes that came from vines planted in several different locations of the south-facing hillside vineyard. The growing conditions of 2002 exceeded expectations. Good quantities of rain occurred during the preceding winter, and a long Spring and even-tempered summer allowed the grapes to develop slowly and take all the nourishment that the soil and sun had to offer. The grapes were harvested in late September.
Production Notes
Winemaking style followed classic Bordeaux methods. The grapes were sorted, destemmed and gently lifted into small tanks for fermentation. Following fermentation, the wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels and bottled in June 2004.
